Rebecca Chartrand, Liberal Candidate for Churchill - Keewatinook Aski

Rebecca Chartrand is Anishinaabe and Métis with roots the Pine Creek First Nation, she is the Liberal Party’s candidate for Churchill - Keewatinook Aski, MB.
  
Background and Experience
-Rebecca has a notable background working in the education field, she is an Educational Consultant and is known for developing innovative educational programs and policies with Manitoba school boards and institutions.

-Some of the organizations she has worked with or led include: Indigenous educational advisory committee for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The Canadian Teachers Federal Aboriginal Voice Working Group and the Manitoba Teachers Society – Indigenous Voice and Action Committee.

-Rebecca’s advocacy work includes be a strong voice for women and addressing issues that affect them. She has been a loud advocate for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls. After the tragic loss of Tina Fontaine she helped launch the Drag the Red campaign to see the river for missing bodies. Previous to that, she co-created a play
“Those Damns Squaws” which dealt with issue of violence against women.

-She has a long list of awards and accolades that include: 2011 Indspire Award- Innovation in Educator Award; 2011-Manitoba Aboriginal Circle of Educators Award – Sustaining Our Ways; 2009 Urban Aboriginal Economic Development Award – for Anishinaabe Pedagogy article; 2009 Founded CAEM- Council for Aboriginal Education in Manitoba, affiliated with the Manitoba Teachers Society; 2001 Canadian Race Relations Award – Excellence in education; 2000 Canadian Aboriginal Music Award, best Traditional/Contemporary CD; 1997 Governor General Award – Academics.

Riding History
-The riding has a history of electing NDP and Liberal MPs, including notable Liberal Indigenous MPs: Actress and advocate Tina Keeper and political trailblazer, the late Elijah Harper.
-The current MP is Niki Ashton the daughter of the provincial NDP Minister Steve Ashton who serves much of the same region. Niki has been the NDP’s critic for Aboriginal and Northern Affairs and is also known for her Aboriginal advocacy work.
-Churchill Keewatinook-Aski has a large Aboriginal population, 74.7% of total Canadian citizens in the riding (2011 Census NHS). 
-The riding also has the largest Aboriginal population out of any riding in Canada with almost 62,000 First Nation, Metis and Inuit people. It includes several Cree, Metis and Anishinaabe First Nation communities.

Jody Wilson-Raybould, Liberal Candidate for Vancouver Granville

Jody Wilson-Raybould is Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw and is the Liberal Party of Canada’s candidate for the new riding of Vancouver Granville.

Background and Experience
- Jody has a background in leadership and advocacy, most recently being the two-term Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations elected by 203 First Nations Chiefs in British Columbia. First elected in 2009, she was re-elected by 80% of the vote in 2012.
- In her role as BC Regional Chief, she held several portfolios including: Governance and Nation building, Chiefs Committee on Claims (reserve and specific claims) and chaired the Comprehensive Claims joint working group.
- She was elected as Commissioner of the BC Treaty Commission in 2004 by the First Nations Summit (BC), which she served for nearly seven years, over a year as acting Chief Commissioner.
- Jody was elected a council for the We Wai Kai Nation in 2009; she was appointed her nation’s representative to the First Nations Lands Advisory Board and was a member of the Finance Committee. She worked to develop the nation’s financial administration law. She was Chair of the First Nations Finance Authority (FNFA) from 2013-2015.
- She practiced law as Crown prosecutor in Vancouver criminal courthouse in the downtown eastside from 2000-2003.

Riding History
- Vancouver Granville is a new riding located in central metro Vancouver created as part of the 2012 federal electoral boundary redistribution process.
- The riding was created from parts of Vancouver Centre, Vancouver Quadra, Vancouver Kingsway and Vancouver South formerly represented by two Liberals, one NDP and one Conservative MP respectively.
- Vancouver Granville has a fairly small Aboriginal population at 1.5% (2011), however it is a diverse riding with a sizeable Asian community.

Don Rusnak, Liberal Party of Canada candidate for Thunder Bay - Rainy River



Don Rusnak is Anishinaabe and is the Liberal Party of Canada’s candidate for Thunder Bay – Rainy River in Ontario.

Background and Experience
- Don is a lawyer in Thunder Bay who has extensive experience in forestry industry, public sector and through his own private practice.
- He has been the interim Executive Director for the Grand Council of Treaty 3 which represents dozens of Anishinabe First Nations in northwestern Ontario.
- Don previously worked for Manitoba Health helping to improve healthcare delivery services for northern Manitoba communities. He worked for Alberta Justice as a Crown Prosecutor for both criminal and regulatory offences.
- He has volunteered and supported a number of organizations including Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative, Canadian Cancer Society, the Dew Drop In Centre and Harbour Youth Services of Thunder Bay to name a few.
- Don studied Political Science at Lakehead University and went on to finish his legal education at the University of Manitoba and Osgoode Hall Law School.

Riding History
- Thunder Bay - Rainy River is northwestern Ontario that starts at Thunder Bay, straddles the U.S. border to the Lake of the Woods.
- It has a history of electing NDP and Liberal MPs, the current MP is NDP MP John Rafferty he has been the NDP’s Critic for Pensions.
- Former Chief Georjann Morriseau of the Fort William First Nation originally was a candidate but removed her name to run again for Chief, she is now a Councillor.
- The Aboriginal population of Thunder Bay – Rainy River is 10,765 or 13.4% (2011 Census) and include numbers several Anishinabe First Nations.

Della Anaquod is of Saulteaux, Cree and Dakota ancestry and is a member of the Muscowpetung First Nation. She is the Liberal Party of Canada candidate for Regina – Qu’Appelle.

Background and Experience

-For over 20 years, Della has served a number of leadership roles in higher learning institutions, including: 
Dean of School and Academic and Career Education at Saskatchewan Polytechnic; Dean of Enrolment Management at Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, where she was also a Instructor, lecturer and course development and curricular writer. 
-She was the Dean of Student Services at the First Nations University of Canada (SIFC), where she was played a leadership role on Board of Governors - including being the Chairperson. Della was also sessional lecturer and academic assistant. Her background includes teaching posts in the business management field and the law course for the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association of Canada.
-Della has been the Regional Manager for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Association. She has previously served as the Board President for the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Network. She also worked for the Office of the Treaty Commissioner.
-She has an impressive educational background that includes Bachelor of Administration from the University of Regina, a Bachelor of Arts in Indian Studies and Economics from the First Nations University of Canada, a Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan, a MBA in Executive Management Education Administration from Royal Roads University.

Riding History
- The riding changed very little as a result of the 2013 electoral redistribution process. It includes the northeast part of Regina and the rural area stretches out to the Qu’Apelle valley.
- The current MP and Conservative candidate is \ who currently serves as Speaker of the House of Commons.
- The Aboriginal population of the riding is 22.5% (2011) of total Canadian citizen population. Piapot First Nation owns the Creeland Mini-Mart in the riding.
- In addition to the urban Aboriginal community Regina, Regina-Qu’Apelle includes many Cree (Nehiyawak), Saulteaux (Anishinabe) and Assiniboine (Nakoda) First Nations throughout the riding.
